You cannot follow a grid azimuth with a compass; nor can you plot a magnetic azimuth with a protractor. To assist you in making the conversion from magnetic north to grid north, and vice versa, a declination diagram is placed on the margin of your map. The angular difference between grid north and magnetic north is called the G-M ANGLE.

Magnetic to Grid Azimuths: Again, using your Margarita Peak map, to convert a magnetic azimuth to a grid azimuth, you must add the G-M angle (15 degrees).

                                    EXAMPLE:                 238 degree magnetic azimuth
                                                                       +  15 degrees G-M angle
                                                                       = 253 degree grid azimuth

Grid to Magnetic Azimuths: Using your Margarita Peak map, to convert a grid azimuth to a magnetic azimuth, you must subtract the G-M angle (15 degrees).

                                   EXAMPLE:                    39 degree grid azimuth
                                                                        - 15 degrees G-M angle
                                                                       = 24 degree magnetic azimuth
